United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) has signed up to Seattle-based Aviation Partners Boeing's (APB) B737-900(ER) Split Scimitar Winglet program. The program will consist of retrofitting existing Boeing Next-Generation 737 Blended Winglets with an aluminium winglet tip cap with a new aerodynamically shaped "Scimitar" winglet tip cap and by adding a new Scimitar tipped Ventral Strake. APB intends to have the modification FAA-approved by late February 2014 and expects it to save United Airlines over 57,000 gallons of jet fuel per aircraft per year while enabling its 737-900(ER)s to increase their payloads by up to 3,300 pounds or increase their range by up to 60 nautical miles. APB is also targeting 6 additional Boeing (BOE, Washington National) Next-Generation 737 configurations including the B737-700, the B737-800 and B737-900 for possible certification.
