United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) has taken delivery of its first of twenty-six B787-9s on order from Boeing (BOE, Washington National). United will become the first airline in North America to operate both the B787-8 and B787-9 variants of the Dreamliner family when it launches B787-9 services later this month.
"The airline's technicians will now perform United-specific software installations and hardware upgrades. United pilots will then fly the aircraft to the airline's Houston hub for additional flights before it is expected to enter domestic service on flights between Los Angeles International and Houston Intercontinental in late September," it said.
The widebody, N38950 (msn 36401), will then be deployed on flights from Los Angeles to Melbourne Airport on October 26.
A second of the type is expected to arrive before year-end.
