The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unbundled New York Newark from the New York metro area "NYC" code thereby allowing airlines to apply different fares for the airport.

The change will enter into force on October 3, 2022. From then onwards, the "NYC" code will only cover New York JFK and New York La Guardia. Newark, while located across the state line in New Jersey, is the most conveniently located airport serving Manhattan and a main base for United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare).

IATA clarified that the change only affects fares. Passengers and travel agents will still be able to find flights to all three airports while seeking connections from New York, although airlines will be able to file differentiated fares for the two airports included in the NYC code and Newark.

The ch-aviation capacities module shows that beyond United, which has a 65.8% market share by scheduled departure capacity at Newark, the only other airlines with a greater than 5% share are Spirit Airlines (6.5%) and American Airlines (5.9%).
