Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) has engaged Airbus and Boeing over its plans to find a replacement for its A340 fleet.
Sources familiar with developments told Bloomberg that the German carrier is looking to acquire "about 20" jets and is looking at the A350 from Airbus and the B787 from Boeing. As part of the talks, Lufthansa is also looking for assistance in the disposal of the A340s which currently number fifteen A340-300s and seventeen A340-600s. A deal may be finalized in the next few months, the sources added.
Lufthansa currently twenty-five A350-900s (of which eleven have been delivered) on order from Airbus with options for thirty more. It is also the launch operator for the B777-9, due to deliver in 2020, and has thirty-four on order from Boeing.
