Orion Airways (Larnaca) has signed an agreement with Jordan Aviation (R5, Amman Queen Alia) for the lease of a B737 Classic. The start-up is currently pursuing its AOC with the Cypriot Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) amid plans to launch scheduled passenger flights later this year.

Local media reports indicate Orion Airways plans to serve Athens, London and the Middle East from its Larnaca hub initially before expanding.

Orion Airways is one of a handful of privately-owned start-ups that have emerged since the collapse of Cyprus Airways (1947) (Larnaca) early last year. Since then, TUS Airways (U8, Larnaca) has successfully completed its certification and, despite initial set-backs, has now launched flights between Cyprus and Israel using a pair of Saab 340Bs.

Fellow entrant, Cobalt (Larnaca), recently took delivery of its first aircraft, an A320-200, amid revised plans to launch budget passenger flights on June 1.
