Ex-Nigeria Airways staff demand $26mn severance payout

Former employees of defunct Nigeria Airways (Lagos) are urging the federal government to release NGN36 billion (USD26 million) in severance benefits approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last year, reports Nigeria's Daily Trust newspaper.
The payments, approved in June 2025, were meant to resolve a decades-long struggle for compensation following the airline's liquidation in 2004. However, nine months after the presidential directive, the funds have yet to be disbursed, according to workers’ representatives.
In a March 29 statement, spokesperson Sheri Kyari, also a former assistant manager at Nigerian Airways, said the finance ministry had not yet authorised the release of the money. The group appealed to the current finance minister, Wale Edun, and other officials to act immediately.
"Across Nigeria, elderly former workers are dying in penury, unable to afford food, shelter, medication, and other basic necessities of life," Kyari said, adding that some retirees had died without receiving their entitlements.
The former employees' struggle for severance pay has spanned multiple administrations. Former president Muhammadu Buhari approved partial payments after years of protests, but a balance remained outstanding until Tinubu’s approval last year.
Nigeria Airways ceased operations in 2003 and was formally liquidated in 2004 by the federal government.

The Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Udara) will take delivery of 12 factory-new Pilatus PC-24s for pilot training, air transport, and liaison missions, with options for additional units.
The order for the twelve jets was placed with Pilatus Aircraft by PT E-System Solutions Indonesia, the Ministry of Defence's authorised contractor. The deal includes ground support equipment, tools, spare parts, training, and technical support.
The air force's executive jet fleet currently comprises two Falcon 8X trijets used for VIP transport, along with a Premier I for utility missions and transport of senior Army officials. In addition, the service operates four B737-200s, three B737-400s, a B737-500, two B737-800s, and a B737-800(BBJ).
The letter of intent (LOI) with Pilatus also covers the acquisition of twenty-four PC-21 turboprop trainers, within a broader package that includes ground-based training and support equipment, spare parts, and technical support.
“The selection by the Indonesian Air Force emphasises the growing interest of government operators in our PC-24 super versatile jet. We remain focused on supplying solutions to facilitate various missions ranging from training to transport,” said Ioannis Papachristofilou, vice president of government aviation at Pilatus Aircraft.
Indonesia joins other air forces operating the PC-24, including the Botswana Defence Force and Qatar Emiri Air Force, each with a single aircraft. In France, the navy (Aéronavale) took delivery in March of two of three PC-24s ordered in mid-2025.
