Fastjet (Dar es Salaam) has made more progress with its plan to set-up a pan-African low-cost carrier. Its owner Rubicon Diversified Investments, in which easyJet (London Luton) founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou owns a 5% stake, has reached agreement with Lonrho (which in turn also owns 79% of Rubicon) to acquire Lonrho Aviation, the parent of Kenyan regional carrier Fly540 (FFV, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta). Fly540 has regional franchise operations in Angola, Ghana and Tanzania set-up in cooperation with local investors. Fastjet plans to replace the regional jets and turboprops used by Fly540 and sister carriers Fly540 Angola (Luanda 4 De Fevereiro), Fly540 Ghana (Accra) and Fly540 Tanzania (Dar es Salaam) with either A319-100s, B737-700s and/or E190s. Fastjet's CEO will be former easyJet COO Ed Winter and the carrier reportedly also plans to add some ex-easyJet A319-100s.
