Windjet (Catania) has ceased operations in the evening of Saturday, August 11 after talks with Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) over the previously agreed acquisition of the Sicily based low-cost carrier have broken down. It was widely expected that it would not be able to continue operations by itself given it was in financial difficulties already before the merger with Alitalia had been announced earlier this year. Windjet operated with a fleet of five A319-100s and seven A320-200s from bases at Catania, Palermo International and Rimini offering domestic routes but also international flights to Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Spain and Ukraine.
