The Competition Commission of India says it will investigate the events that led to IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi International) cancelling thousands of flights on December 3 to 5, sparking travel chaos across the country. Having studied information filed against the airline, the commission "has decided to proceed further in the matter in accordance with the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002".
IndiGo said it expects to pay out INR5 billion (USD55.8 million) in compensation to passengers left stranded during the operational meltdown, which it blamed on an "unfortunate and unforeseeable confluence" of factors. CEO Pieter Elbers has since told staff that "the worst is behind us" as the carrier restores its schedules.
