Island Air (Hawaii) (Honolulu) has entered into discussions with Yucaipa Companies, LLC, over the possible purchase of the rights to the Aloha Airlines (Honolulu) name, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports. Island Air is owned by tech billionaire Larry Ellison while Yucaipa is a Los Angeles-based holding company, focusing on private equity investments, owned by fellow billionaire Ron Burkle. In January 2011 Yucaipa Cos., the former majority shareholder of Aloha, won federal Bankruptcy Court approval to buy the Aloha name and other intellectual property for USD1.5million with a stipulation that it not resell the name to Mesa Airlines (YV, Phoenix Sky Harbor), who planned to use the Aloha name for its go! (Hawaii) (Honolulu) subsidiary. However, in 2009, when Mesa sought to re-brand its go! planes as Aloha, Federal Bankruptcy Judge Lloyd King intervened and embargoed the move following pressure from former Aloha Airlines employees who allegedly blamed Mesa for Aloha's demise.
