FMI Air (Yangon) is on track to commence scheduled operations out of Nay Pyi Taw before the end of the year. Having secured investment approval from the Myanmar Investment Commission, the start-up, along with APEX Airlines (Yangon), is now in the final stages of securing its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) from the country's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), due in December.
According to CAPA, using its three CRJ200s and a Challenger 800, FMI Air plans to develop the underserved Myanma capital into a domestic hub before branching out regionally. CEO Bruce Nobles says that once operations in Naypyitaw have been consolidated, FMI plans to base one of its aircraft at the already over-subscribed Yangon but does not plan to follow Myanmar’s other domestic carriers in operating any of the main trunk routes from Yangon.
Should the market respond as planned, the carrier then intends to acquire larger regional jets such as the E190, the CRJ900 or the Bombardier Aerospace (BBA, Montréal Trudeau) C-Series.
