Japan's ANA Holdings has made a second attempt at entering the Myanmar market following the establishment of Asian Blue Aviation (Yangon), the provisional name of a start-up international carrier.
A 49/51 joint-venture between the Japanese firm and local firm, Golden Sky World, Asian Blue must first secure regulatory approval from the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) before it can proceed with certification.
According to an official in Myanmar's Department of Civil Aviation who spoke to the Myanmar Times newspaper, the carrier will focus on international routes only.
ANA's previous attempt at securing a foothold in Myanmar through the acquisition of a 49% stake in Asian Wings Airways (Yangon), ended in mid-2014 with the Japanese citing "an increasingly competitive Myanma domestic market."
