Surf Air Mobility Inc. - the parent of electric aviation company Surf Air (URF, Santa Monica) - has announced its intention to go public through a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange, to be preceeded by a merger with Southern Airways Corporation, the parent of Southern Airways Express (9X, Memphis International).
According to a June 5 filing on the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Southern and its consolidated subsidiaries will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAM immediately before the listing, which would happen "as soon as practicable".

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has rebuffed an attempt by SkyWest Airlines (OO, Salt Lake City) to hive off the provision of Essential Air Services to its new charter subsidiary, SkyWest Charter (SWC).
Citing a decision by the local community and airport, the DOT – in an order dated May 1, 2023 - said it had no choice but to turn down SWC's proposal to provide EAS at Scottsbluff, Nebraska. It followed the community's request to insist that parent SkyWest Airlines continue providing the service until a suitable replacement carrier was found.
Citing an ongoing pilot shortage amongst regional US carriers, SkyWest Airlines in March 2022 filed a 90-day notice that it intended to stop providing EAS services to 29 communities – including Scottsbluff - from June 8, 2022. However, the DOT ordered SkyWest Airlines to continue servicing those communities until it found a suitable replacement.
The US pilot crisis results from, amongst others, regulatory requirements for Part 121 airline pilots (both captains and first officers) to hold Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)...

Northern Pacific Airways (7H, Anchorage Ted Stevens) is branching off into charters, having announced a partnership with Air Planning, a large group air charter broker, using the startup's fleet of four B757-200s.
"We are starting charters as soon as we are issued OpsSpecs [Operations Specifications issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)]," confirmed Chief Executive Officer Rob McKinney.
He also confirmed the charters would be in addition to Northern Pacific Airways' planned debut of seasonal scheduled domestic flights from June 2 to July 30, 2023, between its maintenance base in Ontario, east of Los Angeles, and Las Vegas Harry Reid, using one of its B757-200s.
McKinney explained the airline was still pursuing ETOPS [extended-range twin-engine operations performance standards] to fly to Asia. As reported, Northern Pacific Airways originally planned to connect the US with Northeast Asia via its home base in Anchorage Ted Stevens, Alaska. However, subsequent airspace closures following Russia's war on Ukraine meant it required ETOPS. This created a conundrum, where it could not apply for ETOPS...

Southern Airways Express (9X, Memphis International) has reached an agreement with Jetstream Aviation Capital to take an additional three Saab 340Bs over the following few months, with one to be deployed to Southern's Hawaii subsidiary, Mokulele Airlines (Kona), and the other two to its mainland US operations.
A Southern Airways Express spokesperson told ch-aviation that the Hawaii-bound Saab (Sweden) is due there early this (northern) summer but the specific aircraft has not yet being selected. Mokulele Airlines already operates two Saab 340Bs, N79SA (msn 334) and N95SA (msn 345), primarily between Honolulu and Kaunakakai. The arriving Saab is expected to mostly fly scheduled services between Honolulu, Kaunakakai, and Lanai City. The Saabs supplement Mokelele's larger fleet of Cessna (single turboprop) 208EX Grand Caravans. In addition, three Southern Airways Express-owned Tecnam P2012s deployed to Marianas Southern Airways (Saipan) are heading to Mokulele Airways after Marianas Southern Airways ended operations on April 1, 2023.
