Mountain Air Cargo (MTN, Kinston) plans to add one ATR72-600F to its fleet for use in interstate and foreign charter cargo operations under contract with US logistics giant FedEx Express (FX, Memphis International), according to a regulatory filing by the US Department of Transportation.

In the August 11 order, the DOT tentatively declared MAC "fit, willing, and able" to conduct interstate and foreign charter air transportation of property and mail as a US certificated air carrier. The DOT also acknowledged MAC's US citizenship.

This follows MAC's application on October 4, 2021, for certificates of public convenience and necessity to engage in interstate and foreign charter all-cargo air transportation. The certificate authority is needed to operate large aircraft.

Wholly-owned by Delaware holding company Air T, Inc, MAC already has Part 135 and 121 certificates issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The company also owns a Part 145 repair station in Kinston, North Carolina, and performs maintenance work for itself and other commercial and government air carriers.

MAC's fleet comprises twenty-five Cessna (single turboprop) 208B Caravans, nine ATR42-300(F)s, and ten ATR72-200(F)s, which it operates under a long-standing dry-lease agreement with FedEx Express in the US and the Caribbean. As reported, it also operates new Cessna 408 SkyCouriers on behalf of FedEx.

Meanwhile, the DOT found MAC to have sufficient finances to commence its proposed charter operations with the ATR72-600F. It estimated the carrier would need about USD1.992 million to operate the ATR - Avions de Transport Régional turboprop and would incur about USD1.56 million in first-year expenses.

According to the docket, MAC reported net profits of USD204,118 and USD923,831 in 2019 and 2020, respectively, on revenues of USD64.85 million and USD62.86 million. In 2021, it made a net profit of USD1.52 million on revenues of USD62.62 million. By December 31, 2021, MAC's assets totalled USD2.43 million with liabilities of USD3.34 million, giving it a negative working capital balance of USD909,375.
