The Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) A330neo Family is affected by the same technical glitches which affect Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines powering the competing Boeing B787 Family, Bloomberg has reported.

According to the report, Trent 7000 units which are the only engines available for the A330neo Family are also affected by durability issues discovered in Trent 1000 engines. The glitches led to a recent grounding of multiple B787-8s and B787-9s by Thai Airways International, Norwegian, Air New Zealand, LATAM Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and others.

So far, Rolls-Royce had to bear the costs of some GBP220 million pounds (USD313 million) related to compensation and unscheduled maintenance of Trent 1000 engines powering B787-9s. The A330neo Family has not yet entered commercial service but the manufacturer is afraid that the issues could deter buyers in the future, one of Bloomberg's sources has said.

Fixes for Trent 7000 engines are expected to be available only around the end of 2018, some half a year after the new twinjet is scheduled to enter commercial service.

The most pressing durability concerns are related to engine blades in the Trent 1000 Family and also affect the upgraded version dubbed Trent 1000 TEN.

Airbus has so far inked orders for more than 200 A330-900s with the largest orders placed by AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International) (sixty-six units), Air Lease Corporation (twenty-nine units), and IranAir (IR, Tehran Mehrabad) (twenty-eight units).
