Skybus (United Kingdom) (8Y, Land's End) terminated its public service obligation (PSO) flights between Newquay and London Gatwick on April 3, 2026, almost two months earlier than planned. The airline attributed the decision to the rapidly rising fuel prices and the low demand. Chief executive, Jonathan Hinkles, said that passenger interest plummeted after the Cornwall Council decided to end financing of the route after May 31. Skybus was wet-leasing an DHC-8-Q400 from Universal Air for the route until the end of March. Flights on April 1 and 2 were operated by Ascend Airways with a B737-8.

South Korea's SUM Air orders 4+4 ATR72-600s

SUM Air has placed a firm order for four new ATR72-600s directly from ATR - Avions de Transport Régional with purchase rights for a further four. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028.

"The aircraft acquired through this agreement will be deployed to operate routes to island airports such as Ulleungdo, Baengnyeongdo, and Heuksando. The ATR 72-600, optimized for short-haul operations, will play a pivotal role in enabling Sum Air to deliver air services that connect islands and regions across Korea," chief executive officer Yongduck Choi said.

The start-up, which began scheduled operations on March 30, 2026, on the Seoul Gimpo-Jinju route, currently operates a single ATR72-600 dry-leased from Avation. However, Choi revealed in a recent interview with ch-aviation that the carrier's plan envisaged up to 25 turboprops by the end of the decade. SUM Air aims to add two more ATRs on lease in 2026.

For its part, ATR has been pushing into the South Korean market. While historically dominated by jet operators, the country's domestic market also covers many smaller airports, as well as remote islands where new airports are under construction, which the OEM sees as promising for its aircraft.

IAG drops out from TAP privatisation at bidding deadline

IAG International Airlines Group has not submitted a bid for up to 49.9% in TAP Air Portugal (TP, Lisbon) by the April 2, 2026, deadline, leaving Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM in the race as the only interested parties.

IAG International Airlines Group has not submitted a bid for up to 49.9% in TAP Air Portugal (TP, Lisbon) by the April 2, 2026, deadline, leaving Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM in the race as the only interested parties.

While the Anglo-Spanish holding did not issue a statement, multiple news agencies, including Bloomberg and EFE, reported that sources confirmed the bid was not submitted. IAG previously expressed concern about the lack of a clear path to majority ownership, something that the group considered essential in the long term.

Meanwhile, both Air France-KLM and Lufthansa Group confirmed they submitted binding offers by the deadline.

Lufthansa Group chief commercial officer Dieter Vranckx told ch-aviation earlier this week that the group was interested in TAP, despite the ongoing integration of recent acquisition, ITA Airways. The German holding expects that it will have taken up a majority share in the Italian airline before the integration of TAP begins, should its bid be successful.

"TAP is a natural fit within Air France-KLM’s multi-hub strategy, and our ambition is to strengthen the operations at Lisbon while developing connectivity in other cities across the country including Porto,” Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith told Bloomberg.

The Portuguese government plans to retain a 50.1% stake in TAP. In the first tranche of privatisation, a 5% stake will be reserved for employees, and the private investor will be able to get a 44.9% stake. This can increase if the employees' allotment is not fully taken up. As one of the conditions for the privatisation, the government expects the new co-owner to keep the TAP brand and the Lisbon hub.

NZ Jet (Ardmore, NZ) has partnered with Orion Aeromedical to provide international medical evacuation services. Orion Aeromedical will supply medical expertise and manage air medical operations, while NZ Jet will serve as aircraft operator, with a Citation V and an Astra SPX inducted in early 2026, both capable of rapid reconfiguration for medical missions. The range of Astra SPX, which enables non-stop flights between New Zealand and most South Pacific islands, was a key factor in forming the partnership. NZ Jet co-founder John Ambler will assume the role of Orion Aeromedical's director of aviation.
