PLUNA (Montevideo Carrasco) had been forced to temporarily suspend operations earlier this week already as a result of strike action by its unions. The Uruguayan government had started negotiations with BQB Líneas Aéreas (Punta del Este) owner Juan Carlos Lopez Mena about a potential investment in PLUNA to take over the 75% stake previously held by investment group Leadgate. At the same time, a restructuring plan that foresaw up to 200 layoffs has been made public causing the strike by its employees. PLUNA has now announced on July 5 that it has indefinitely suspended all flights and will file for bankruptcy given its financial situation would not allow it to continue with its flight operations without new investments on the horizon. PLUNA had operated 13 CRJ900s on regional routes.
