El Al Israel Airlines (LY, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion) will again be able to add new destinations in the US, increase frequencies on its existing routes to Los Angeles International, New York JFK and New York Newark or enter into codeshare agreements with US carriers after Israel has been upgraded by the US Federal Aviation Administration from a Category 2 to a Category 1 country. The FAA had previously downgraded Israel in 2008 citing shortcomings in safety oversight by the country's civil aviation authority as a reason. El Al is currently the only Israeli carrier serving the US, so will be the only carrier profiting from this upgrade for now.
