Meridiana fly (Olbia) CEO Giuseppe Gentile has announced another round of massive cuts at the loss making Italian carrier on Friday. The airline will retire seven of its 13 A320 family aircraft, both A330-200s and a B767-200 of sister carrier Air Italy (2005) (Milan Malpensa) resulting in additional 650 job cuts from as early as January 2013. One of its two A330-200s currently operates on a wet-lease agreement for Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Airport) and will continue to operate until the end of its lease term in late 2013 and then be returned the lessor. Meridiana fly will continue to operate with nine MD-82s, one MD-83 and six remaining A320 family aircraft with the split between A319-100s and A320-200s yet unclear. All remaining long-haul flights of the group will then be operated by sister carrier Air Italy. The exact details of the network cuts as a result of these plans are yet unknown although Meridiana has made several statements that it did not have any immediate plans to cut routes from and to Sardinia.
