Eastar Jet (ZE, Seoul Gimpo) is considering launching widebody operations with the potential addition of B787 aircraft by 2027, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency has reported.

The South Korean LCC confirmed the development, telling Yonhap it intends to make an official announcement "once the specific introduction and timing are finalised." The specific B787 variant under consideration has not yet been disclosed.

"It is true that a new aircraft introduction task force has been formed, and we are checking the supply status of widebody aircraft with the manufacturer," a representative said.

Unnamed industry sources told the outlet that the airline created an internal task force to study large aircraft in September. It is said to have already contacted Boeing for initial inquiries early in December.

Widebody acquisitions would enable Eastar Jet to launch long-haul services from South Korea, with Los Angeles International and Sydney Kingsford Smith reportedly under consideration as initial destinations.

Eastar Jet had never operated widebody aircraft since it was founded in 2007. According to ch-aviation fleets data, it currently operates ten B737-800s and ten B737-8s, with two additional units of the latter type due for delivery.
