Airlines for Europe (A4E), a lobby group for most large European airlines, has asked the European Commission to provide temporary relief to the industry in light of the Middle East crisis. Proposed measures include a suspension of aviation taxes across the continent, the establishment of a European Union procedure to monitor jet fuel availability, and relief to airlines that have to tanker fuel due to availability concerns. “These are temporary measures to weather us through the current situation, plus more long-term planning to be prepared for the future,” managing director Ourania Georgoutsakou said. The EU has no jurisdiction over aviation taxes, which are set up at the national level.
A4E members include Lufthansa Group, IAG International Airlines Group, Air France-KLM, Ryanair Holdings, and easyJet Group.
