The UK High Court has dismissed an appeal from the operator of London Gatwick airport against a government decision to relax slot rules for the Summer 2026 and the Winter 2026/27 seasons. In a July 7 ruling, the court confirmed that the government had the right to issue such a regulation, which was temporary, voluntary, and followed a lawful consultation process. The regulation allows airlines to return up to 10% of their slots with no impact on their future slot allocation, and was justified by the fear of fuel shortages and challenges stemming from the spike in fuel prices. Gatwick argued that airlines could cut their least profitable routes, and create a financial burden on the airport operator and ground handling companies.
