The European Commission has postponed the renewal of a public service obligation (PSO) route between Alghero and Milan Linate by six months. Following a failed tender procurement process in October 2025, the Italian government extended ITA Airways' current contract period to October 24, 2026, and relaunched a tender with a start date of October 25. This, however, breached EU publication period rules for PSO tenders. As such, a new tender was posted on July 31, 2026, with a postponed contract start date of February 1, 2027, set to expire on March 24, 2029. The tender is valued at EUR25.9 million euros (USD30 million) and may rise to EUR37.7 million (USD43.5 million) if the contract is extended by a year. Talks are underway between local authorities and the European Commission for a further extension to avoid service lapses.
