Nigeria's federal government has commenced the disbursement of NGN18 billion naira (USD13.5 million) in severance payments to 2,700 former Nigeria Airways employees, more than two decades after the national carrier was liquidated in 2004. Settlements for 2,100 workers across seven batches are complete, while 600 beneficiaries in two more batches will receive funds within days. A second mop-up verification phase will commence by early October 2026 to capture beneficiaries whose records could not be processed during the first phase. This follows the approval of the settlement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who directed that the longstanding matter be brought to a close.
