South African Express (Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) along with other operators into Lubumbashi have been forced to adjust their May - October flight schedules after the Regie des Voies Aériennes (RVA), the authority responsible for running Congo's airports, recently announced the upgrading of the airport's badly dilapidated infrastructure. Over the next 5 months, the airport's crumbling runway 07/25 will be upgraded along with other installations namely, a new control tower, fire station, and lighting system. In addition it is hoped that an ILS and an ADS-B station will also be installed to help improve safety in one of Africa's, if the not the world's, most dangerous airspaces. In 2010, an Ethiopian Airlines (ET, Addis Ababa International) B737-800 went off the airport's runway during its roll out as result of the numerous cracks and potholes present.
