Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo) is reportedly mulling leaving Skyteam owing to what it terms "unfavourable agreements with other members, in particular Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson)," the Kommersant daily has reported. It claims that owing to Delta offering uncompetitive fares on its US domestic network, flights from Moscow to the US routed on Aeroflot and Delta are twice as expensive as that of competitor's. Despite United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) having offered the Russians more favourable terms, the airline is unable to accept it owing to the terms of its SkyTeam membership which prohibit cooperation with carriers from other associations. However, citing sources close to the airline's board, while the Russian national carrier feels no tangible benefits have come of its membership in the alliance, no decision has yet been taken to withdraw, though Kommersant reports, this would hinge upon a political directive first. A member of SkyTeam since 2004, Aeroflot cannot undercut fares offered by other members and could become more competitive by joining Star Alliance, the biggest airline marketing group, with 27 members.
