Alas Uruguay (Montevideo Carrasco) has not received the first tranche of USD15million in funding from the Uruguayan state as had been expected. Montevidean newswire, El Espectador, says government has postponed the signing of the loan, originally set for Monday, December 30, 2013, for reasons that are still uncertain. However, airline director, Sabrina Acevedo, intends to force Montevideo to keep its word to allocate the start-up funding. Ms Acevedo says government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the airline in June, in which it pledged it aircraft, frequencies and access to a USD15million FONDES loan. No future date for the signing of the actual agreement has been made public. The first advance, which would have entailed USD387'000, was to have been used for operating expenses such as office rentals, salaries and the purchase of airline tickets to allow company representatives to go and view the B737-300s that are set to be leased. Alas Uruguay executives hope to offer charter flights to Brazil from mid-2014 to coincide with the FIFA World Cup.
