Fly My Sky (Taumarunui) is launching scheduled services and tours from Auckland International to Matamata, the closest airport to the Hobbiton movie set, which was used in the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' trilogies.
The Matamata service will operate twice daily, is set to commence on November 18, and will utilise the regional carrier's nine-seat BN-2 aircraft. According to Fly My Sky's website, it owns four Islanders and flies these aircraft up to five times daily from Auckland to Great Barrier Island.
Fly My Sky Director, Keith McKenzie, said: "The flights will allow passengers a quick and easy way to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set, and give customers more choice and flexibility of travel options."
Hobbiton is acknowledged as one of New Zealand's most popular tourism destinations, with many visitors citing the Lord of the Rings films as a major influence on their decision to come to the country.
