Aerolíneas Argentinas (AR, Buenos Aires Jorge Newbery) would like to operate flights to Mount Pleasant International on the Falkland Islands according to statements made by Argentinian president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Currently LAN Airlines (Santiago de Chile) is the only Latin American carrier serving the airport once weekly from Santiago de Chile via Punta Arenas International with one monthly flight also stopping at Rio Gallegos to allow Argentinians to travel to the islands that are a British overseas territory also claimed by Argentina.
