Wizz Air Abu Dhabi cancels Russia return

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi (5W, Abu Dhabi International) has cancelled its planned October 3 relaunch of flights to Moscow Vnukovo, Russia, amidst public outrage and calls for a boycott.

The Emirati low-cost carrier, which is a joint venture of the UAE sovereign wealth fund ADQ and Wizz Air Holdings, said in a statement its decision had been brought on by "industry supply chain limitations".

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi did not provide any further details as to the nature of these limitations. However, the airline recently wet-leased an A320-200 from Romania's Dan Air (JOC, Bucharest Baneasa) to supplement its four in-house A321-200NX.

The airline suspended flights to Russia in late February, after the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. While the European Union, the United States, and a number of allied Western states imposed sanctions on Russia, the UAE did not follow suit.
