KLM, IATA lead industry appeal against Schiphol flight cap
28.07.2023 - 09:11 UTCMajor airlines led by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have come together to lodge an appeal in cassation against the July 7 judgment of the Dutch appeal court that allows the government to scale back capacity at Amsterdam Schiphol next year to reduce noise and carbon emissions.
The Amsterdam Appeal Court's overturned an April 5 judgement by the District Court of Noord-Holland which ruled the state did not follow the correct European Union regulations when it sought to cut capacity from 500,000 to 440,000 flights annually at Schiphol for the 2023/2024 season. The state took the matter on appeal, resulting in the appeal court ruling that the state may establish a "temporary experimental scheme" that would not violate EU regulations, provided it met certain conditions.
However, the airline grouping argues that the appeal court ruling results in a lack of clarity and uncertainty for travellers and the aviation sector. "It does not appear from the ruling how an experimentation scheme can be applied and how enforcement should be...

KLM to invest $7.6bn in new aircraft to meet noise targets
21.06.2023 - 17:26 UTCKLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL, Amsterdam Schiphol) will invest up to EUR7 billion euros (USD7.6 billion) in new aircraft in coming years and adopt smarter flight procedures and schedules as part of a three-pronged plan it says will see it achieve a 15% night-time noise reduction target at Amsterdam Schiphol by 2024, to be followed by a 20% noise reduction by 2026.
The plan has been submitted to the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management in response to the government's proposal to reduce noise impact by 20% throughout the day and by 15% at night as quickly as possible. "In its current form, the minister's plan does not revolve around renewal and improvement. No distinction is drawn between newer and older aircraft, which are less clean and silent. The plan also fails to consider that drastic cutbacks in flights will have an impact on national assets," KLM said in a statement.
