DHL Express has announced it will invest EUR134 million euros (USD152 million) in a new sorting facility at Copenhagen Kastrup, allowing the logistics group to increase the capacity of its throughput at the Danish airport fivefold.

The new facility is due to open in 2023. Including office space, it will cover 26,172 square metres in the eastern part of the airport grounds and have the capacity to process almost 37,000 shipments per hour around the clock. It will also create 100 new jobs.

DHL's hub in Copenhagen will serve Denmark and other Nordic markets. Currently, the region is served through the facilities at Leipzig/Halle and Nottingham East Midlands.

"We are experiencing a continuing boom in international online commerce. In addition, we are preparing for the growth of our customers in, for example, the pharmaceutical and fashion industries, and our massive expansion will make our hub at Copenhagen Airport one of the most advanced in the world," Managing Director of DHL Express in Denmark Atli Einarsson said.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, Air Canada and Emirates both already operate scheduled full-freighter flights to Copenhagen from Shanghai Pudong and Dubai World Central respectively.
