President Donald Trump said that the US government is thinking about taking over Spirit Airlines (NK, Fort Lauderdale International) and bailing out the ultra-low-cost carrier, the Wall Street Journal reported.
“We’re thinking about doing it, helping them out, meaning bailing them out or buying it. I think we’d just buy it,” he said, adding he would “love” to save the jobs at Spirit (which number over 11,000). “I’d love to be able to save an airline,” he explained.
The newspaper reported that Trump believes that Spirit’s aircraft and assets are “good” and that the government could sell the company for a profit when conditions allow.
Parent Spirit Aviation Holdings has confirmed it is in “very advanced discussions” with the US government on terms of a material financing package, Bloomberg reported. The Trump administration has proposed a deal for USD500 million of financing in exchange for warrants that could give the government the option to own as much as 90% of Spirit once it emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and help the carrier avoid liquidation.
The US government has reportedly hired law firm Kirkland & Ellis to advise on a rescue deal for Spirit. The firm is assisting in shaping the financing package.
The discussions between both parties come after Spirit missed an interest payment on some of its existing obligations, Bloomberg reported, quoting lawyers. A group of key Spirit bondholders said that they would back the talks with the government but that any financing must respect the existing rights of lenders, adding that they have so far been excluded from any of these talks. The bondholder group includes Citadel, Cyrus Capital, Arena Capital Advisors, and Ares Management Corp.
Prior to the US and Israel attack on Iran, which led to an increase in jet fuel prices globally, Spirit had lined up a plan to exit bankruptcy by this summer, with a fleet of 75 to 80 aircraft (down from over 210 at the start of its latest Chapter 11 filing).

Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) has announced that it will close its seven-aircraft base at Berlin Brandenburg effective October 26, 2026. The low-cost carrier blamed a rise in airport fees by 10% between 2027 and 2029, even though the airport authority denied it was planning such changes and said it was still in negotiations with the airline. Ryanair vowed to relocate the aircraft to bases in lower-tax countries such as Sweden, Slovakia, Albania, and Italy. The closure of the base will lead to a 50% drop in the number of flights operated from the German capital. Ryanair's Berlin base is currently operated by Ryanair Holdings subsidiary Malta Air. The airline is market leader by scheduled capacity, with 48,418 weekly departure seats giving it a 15.4% market share, ahead of easyJet Europe and Eurowings.

US's Black Forest Ventures acquires MAC Air Group

Texas-based asset management firm Black Forest Ventures, parent of aircraft management and charter operator Wing Aviation (CWG, Houston Hobby), has acquired MAC Air Group, including the group's Part 135 division, MAC Jet Charter (MAT, Portland International Jetport).
As of February, MAC Jet Charter's Part 135 certificate comprised two Challenger 800 (CRJ200)s, a Challenger 850, a Citation Jet 4, two Falcon 900Bs, a BAe-125-1000A, and a BAe-125-1000B. The company also manages other aircraft, including a Global Express XRS, a Global 5000, a Citation XLS Gen2, and another BAe-125-1000A.
Additionally, the company operates a specially outfitted CRJ700 Srs 701ER on behalf of Luxembourgish-American multinational satellite services provider Intelsat (Washington Dulles). The jet serves as a testbed and demonstrator for high-speed inflight internet connectivity.
MAC Air Group's acquisition further includes a 28,800-square-foot (2,675-square-metre) fixed-base operation (FBO) unit, MAC Jets, at Portland International Jetport. “Portland International Jetport serves as a key gateway to the Northeast's coastal destinations and supports a strong mix of corporate, charter, and seasonal leisure aviation traffic,” said Jeremy Gee, managing director of Black Forest Ventures Aviation.
Beyond this, MAC Air Group brings a Part 145-certified aircraft maintenance unit with a 12,000-square-foot (1,115-square-metre) hangar, along with a sales and advisory division. Black Forest Ventures said in a statement it plans to expand MAC Air Group infrastructure “to support long-term growth in the Northeast”.
MAC Air Group joins Black Forest Ventures' aviation portfolio which includes two Part 135 operators, namely Wing Aviation with a fleet of 21 fixed-wing aircraft, and Paradigm Helicopters, with two rotary-wing aircraft, alongside FBO chain Galaxy FBO, Part 145-certified aircraft maintenance provider MW Aircraft Services, acquired last month, and brokerage and advisory firm Feldberg Aero.
