JetSMART Colombia (Bogotá) has received its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Colombian civil aviation authority (Aerocivil) and is set to launch operations on March 14, 2024, the company announced.

It will start with seven domestic routes connecting Bogotá with Medellín José Maria Córdova, Cartagena Rafael Núñez International, Pereira, and Santa Marta. It will also connect Medellín with Cartagena and Santa Marta and Cartagena with Pereira.

JetSMART Colombia expects to carry over two million passengers in the first year of operations with a fleet of A320-200neo aircraft with a capacity for 186 passengers in a single-class configuration. The ch-aviation fleets data shows that no such plane has yet received a Colombian registration.

The ch-aviation fleets data module shows sister carrier JetSMART (JA, Santiago de Chile) operates a fleet of 19 aircraft based in Chile, including three A320-200s, eight A320-200Ns, and eight A321-200NX. However, at least one of these planes is bound to go to Colombia. JetSMART Argentina (WJ, Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini) has eight A320-200s, and JetSMART Perú (JZ, Lima International) has five A320-200N.

In 2023, JetSMART announced the launch of a new domestic branch in Colombia. The Chilean-based company already operates in Argentina, Chile, and Peru, serving over 20 international routes in eight countries across South America and 50 domestic routes.

Backed by US-based low-cost carrier specialist firm Indigo Partners, JetSMART Colombia is looking to take advantage of the demise of Viva (Colombia) and Ultra Air in 2023. Both airlines ceased operations in February last year, leaving the country without a true low-cost carrier.
