Renegade Air (RNG, Nairobi Wilson) is to become the first airline in Kenya to resume ATR - Avions de Transport Régional operations with an ATR72-500(F) leased from Abelo Capital Aviation, according to ch-aviation research.

2-ELIX (msn 875) will be registered as 5Y-RNF and stationed at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta to operate regional cargo routes, an airline spokesman confirmed to ch-aviaion. The 14.50-year turbo-prop is currently stored at Malta International. It is scheduled to undergo maintenance with Precision Air (PW, Dar es Salaam), the Tanzanian airline confirmed. According to ch-aviation fleets data, the aircraft formerly flew with India's defunct TruJet (TRJ, Hyderabad International). It will bolster Renegade Air's existing cargo fleet, which currently consists of a single Fokker 50 freighter, 5Y-JWB (msn 20197), leased from Skyward Express (OW, Nairobi Wilson).

According to ch-aviation fleets data, just four ATRs have ever been operated by Kenyan carriers, all of them ATR42-320s: one with African Eagle, two with Eagle Aviation (Kenya) which were then sold to Fly540 (FFV, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) which in turn added a third of the type. All such operations ended in November 2010. Kenya's market is dominated by De Havilland Aircraft of Canada given local operations are characterised by long distances, short runways, and often high airfield elevation. There is general scepticism amongst Nairobi Wilson operators ch-aviation has spoken to, about ATR's suitability to Kenya's gravel airstrips, while lease rates appear to have been prohibitive.

Renegade Air operates a mixed fleet of passenger aircraft, including one DHC-8-100 on behalf of the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNO, Brindisi); three leased F50s operated for Somalia's Salaam Air Express (Mogadishu) and Ghana's Aerojet Aviation (Accra); and one Fokker 70 also operated for Salaam Express.

Additionally, the airline is awaiting its first CRJ100ER, 5Y-RNJ (msn 7107), leased from Avmax Aircraft Leasing. The aircraft is currently in maintenance at Calgary, Canada, according to ADS-B data.

Renegade Air also awaits delivery of another Dash-8-100 from Australian charter specialist Maroomba Airlines (Perth International) and a DHC-8-Q200 leased from Abelo Capital Aviation, according to ch-aviation fleets data.
