Myanmarese carriers have suspended their flights to Myitkyina after an ATR72-600 operated by Myanmar National Airlines (UB, Yangon) was hit by an uncrewed aerial vehicle carrying explosives on February 20, 2026. The attack happened during boarding ahead of the flight to Mandalay International, but no passengers or crew were hurt.

XY-AMI (msn 1368) remains at the airport. Photographs seen by ch-aviation show the aircraft with significant damage to its tail and nose, including cockpit windows.

MNA operates eight ATR72-600s in total, as well as two B737-800s, ch-aviation data shows.

Besides MNA, MAI - Myanmar Airways International, Mann Yadanarpon Airlines, Air Thanlwin, and Mingalar have suspended operations to the airport indefinitely.

The military government of Myanmar blamed the attack on the Kachin Independence Army, one of many ethnic armies fighting against the junta. The KIA denied attacking civilian aircraft.

Myitkyina is the capital of the Kachin state and the main economic centre in northern Myanmar.
