Malta's Prime Minister Robert Abela has proposed introducing an air taxi service between Malta International and Gozo to improve connectivity between Malta's two main islands, which are currently only linked by ferry. The initiative, part of a broader package of more than 100 pledges aimed at Gozo ahead of a general election scheduled for May 30, seeks to address the effects of the sister island's “double insularity,” according to the prime minister. No details regarding timeline, costs, or infrastructure requirements have been disclosed.

Although Gozo has a small paved airstrip, a site currently used only as a heliport, primarily as a base for air ambulance operations. In 2021, the Maltese government outlined plans to extend the heliport's runway to establish an air taxi service linking Gozo with Malta International. The proposal followed similar plans announced in 2016. Neither initiative has materialised.
