The Australian government has disbursed AUD4.8 million Australian dollars (USD3.4 million) to 34 regional and remote airports to settle debts related to the voluntary administration of Rex - Regional Express (ZL, Wagga Wagga).

According to a government press release, 95% of claimant airports were eligible for the Regional and Remote Airport Support Program. The approved facilities received payments for 100% of their eligible unsecured debt.

The largest single payout went to the Dubbo Regional Council in New South Wales at AUD598,672 (USD429,000), while the City of Albany in Western Australia received AUD414,605 (USD297,000).

The compensation program follows the acquisition of Rex by US-based Air T in 2025. The government supported the transaction with an AUD60 million (USD43 million) commercial loan and the restructuring of AUD108 million (USD77.4 million) in debt. The turnaround plan includes a commitment to restore the carrier's operational Saab 340A fleet from 30 to 44 aircraft.

"We committed to and delivered the successful sale of Rex Airlines to keep regional communities connected to the services they need," minister for infrastructure, transport, regional development, and local government Catherine King said in the release. "This financial support is yet another demonstration of our unwavering support for regional and remote aviation."
