Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) will open its two inaugural bases in Spain, at Madrid Barajas and Valencia Manises, and launch its first domestic routes in the country starting in late October 2026.
The low-cost carrier said it would base two A321-200NX aircraft at each of the airports. Its domestic network will comprise services from Madrid to Bilbao, Asturias, Palma de Mallorca, and Santiago de Compostela, and from Valencia to Bilbao, Asturias, Santiago de Compostela, Palma, and Santander. It will also connect Bilbao with Málaga, with no base at the Basque airport.
Nearly the entire network of Wizz Air is currently geared towards international flying, except its sizeable domestic network in Italy. The LCC also operates a subsidised domestic PSO route in Slovakia, connecting Bratislava and Kosice.
The expansion into Spain comes after LCC rival Ryanair curtailed its network in the country, criticising airport operator Aena for high fees. ch-aviation data shows that Wizz Air currently holds just a 3.5% market share on routes from Spain by scheduled weekly capacity, compared to 19.8% held by Ryanair.
