Canada’s transport minister, Steven MacKinnon, has stated that the federal government opposes the Ontario provincial government's plans to expand Toronto Billy Bishop City Centre to accommodate jet traffic. The minister’s comments came after more than 87,000 people responded to a public survey regarding the waterfront airport. However, Ontario transportation minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said that the province plans to go through with the airport expansion.

Regardless of the jet traffic expansion plans, the airport is undergoing safety expansion works to the runway, but those updates will not allow for large jet take-off/landing.
