AirBorneo (MY, Kuching) is considering selling its eight ATR72-500s as it prepares to replace them with newer-generation ATR - Avions de Transport Régional turboprops from 2027, chief executive Megat Ardian Aminuddin told The New Straits Times newspaper.

"We are still discussing that, and there are a few options. Number one is to sell them outright," Megat said. Prospective buyers have already expressed interest, although talks remain at an early stage.

The first replacement aircraft is expected in the third or fourth quarter of 2027, with the ATR72-500s to be phased out as the new aircraft arrive.

AirBorneo has ordered five ATR72-600s and three ATR42-600s, with four additional purchase rights. Deliveries are scheduled through 2029.

The carrier acquired the eight ATR72-500s from Malaysia Aviation Group in December 2025 as part of the Sarawak state government's acquisition of MASwings. The fleet has an average age of 17.2 years, according to ch-aviation data.

AirBorneo also inherited six DHC-6-400s and later began wet leasing two B737-800s for its jet operations.
