Syria's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) is planning to convert the military air base at Mezzeh into a civilian airport focused on executive and general aviation, complementing commercial operations at Damascus. Preliminary work has begun, including rubble removal and upgrades to air navigation systems, while authorities complete the technical and regulatory requirements needed for the airport's reclassification.

The project is intended to support the development of Syria's civil aviation sector, with planning taking into account the surrounding urban area, noise levels, the nature and volume of air traffic, and any legal and community considerations.
