Sierra Leone is keen to talk to Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo) on launching direct flights between Russia and Freetown, according to the West African country's ambassador to Moscow, Mohamed Yongawo. Speaking on the sidelines of the North Caucasus international forum in Russia on October 6, 2026, Yongawo said practical discussions have not yet begun, but Sierra Leone is ready to engage, adding that Aeroflot could also consider services to neighbouring Liberia and Guinea. Yongawo said direct air links would benefit both sides and support bilateral ties. The Sierra Leone government also wants Russian businesses to invest in coffee cultivation, offering land leases, while discussions continue on Russian involvement in mining and geological exploration.
