Mozambique's KayaAirlines (KYY, Maputo) has acquired a 34.7-year-old B737-500, which was tracked as flying from Uzbekistan via Afghanistan in the direction of Iran on September 30, 2026, according to ch-aviation research.

ADS-B data showed that Mozambican-registered C9-KAL (msn 25188) flew from Navoi in Uzbekistan to Mazar i Sharif, the main airport in northern Afghanistan, and proceeded on a straight southwestern routing towards Iran, with tracking sites losing the signal at Sar-e Darah in the Darzab area of northern Afghanistan. Unconfirmed reports said it had arrived in Iran, but this could not be verified.

According to ch-aviation data, the Boeing jet was last operated by Voyage Air (VRG, Varna) as LZ-TER from 2019, having previously flown with Africa Charter Airline from 2017 as ZS-THY. In 2016, it flew with VIM Airlines as VP-BVV, after a spell with now-defunct Transaero Airlines from 2007. The aircraft was delivered new to China Southern Airlines in 1992. It is fitted with 126 seats in a single-class cabin.

The current operational status of KayaAirlines is unclear. It appears to have gone dormant after it was reported to have ceased operations in February 2021. ch-aviation was unable to reach it for more information, while Mozambique's civil aviation authority (Instituto da Aviação Civil de Moçambique - IACM) did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Founded in 1991 as Sabin Air and later known as Transairways (Maputo), the carrier rebranded as KayaAirlines in 2009 and resumed limited scheduled domestic services in 2011, alongside charter operations. It historically operated small turboprops, including E120s and Let 410s.

The latest available IACM aircraft register, published in 2022, does not list KayaAirlines as holding any other active aircraft.
