Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi International) has suspended its three times weekly passenger and twice weekly cargo flights to the Libyan capital's Tripoli International airport, effective immediately. Justifying the move in a statement, the airline said: “As the safety and security of our guests, employees and assets remains our number one priority, our assessment of the existing situation at Tripoli airport does not provide the level of assurance we require to ensure safe operation of our flights. Once we are satisfied that the arrangements at Tripoli airport meet our requirements, we will resume services.” Emirates (EK, Dubai International) continues its recently resumed service to Tripoli via Malta International while fellow Gulf carrier, Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad International), is in discussions with Libyan authorities over a possible resumption of flights following threats to the airline, its aircraft and personnel earlier this year. In other news, Etihad has taken delivery of its first of two A320-200s from global leasing specialists, Avolon. Financed by Abu Dhabi National Leasing, the twinjets are part of a sale and leaseback transaction in which the second aircraft is due at Abu Dhabi International in December.
