US Airways (Phoenix Sky Harbor) has passed into the history books following its last commercial flight - US1939 - on Friday, October 16. Routed Philadelphia International-Charlotte International-Phoenix Sky Harbor-San Francisco-Philadelphia Int'l, the flight was operated by A321-200 N152UW (cn 5588) and was the last to use the "US" flight code.

The move coincides with the introduction of a single, unified reservations system - one of the final steps in US Airways' USD11 billion merger with American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) - wherein all flights will now operate under the "AA" flight-code.

Founded in 1937 as All American Aviation, the airline initially served the Ohio River valley from its hub in Pittsburgh before being renamed Allegheny Airlines (1953) (Pittsburgh International). Operating primarily along the US East Coast, Allegheny acquired regional carriers Lake Central Airlines (Indianapolis International) in 1968 and Mohawk Airlines (Utica) in 1972.

With the deregulation of the US airline industry in 1979, Allegheny renamed itself US Air (Pittsburgh International) and then US Airways as it expanded its scope to cover the entire United States. It then acquired several other carriers such as PSA (1949) (San Diego International), Piedmont Airlines (1948) (Charlotte International), Trump Shuttle (New York La Guardia), and America West Airlines (Phoenix Sky Harbor) prior to its merger with American Airlines.
