FAA issues guidance notice to Blackbird Air platform
31.12.2019 - 11:43 UTCThe US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has sent a letter to Blackbird Air, an online marketplace, aircraft agent and charter broker, which created a web-based application (app) that connects passengers with pilots. The idea behind the app is for passengers to give up their cars and replace those more time-consuming journeys with flights operated by hand-picked pilots and aircraft using more convenient airports. At the time of writing, the app was still available for download on Blackbird Air's website.
In its communication with Blackbird Air, the FAA outlined its policy on the requirements for pilots who are paid to fly passengers. The policy states that pilots who are paid to fly passengers generally cannot just hold the required Commercial or Airline Transport pilot licence – they also must be employed by the company operating the flight, which must hold a certificate issued under Part 119 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Failing that, the pilots must hold a Part 119 certificate themselves.

Acorn Growth Companies fund acquires Berry Aviation
19.07.2018 - 18:01 UTCA private equity firm focused on aerospace, defence, and intelligence sectors, Acorn Growth Companies, has acquired Berry Aviation (BYA, San Marcos) for an undisclosed sum.
"Berry Aviation has a proven track record and developed excellent past performance supporting the U.S. government and its allies, while also offering scheduled and on-demand freight and fixed-base operator (FBO) services to businesses and individual operators. Berry Aviation is a great Acorn fit, having built a track record and experienced tremendous success in this market segment," Rick Nagel, managing partner of Acorn Growth Companies has said.
The new investor intends to further develop Berry Aviation's capabilities and grow the company in the existing market sectors.
Berry Aviation provides passenger charter services focused on the contracts with the US Department of Defence. The carrier has operated on behalf of the US government in the contiguous US, Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Johnston Island, Afghanistan, Peru and Africa. It also operates cargo charters and offers maintenance services.

Berry Aviation to open an MRO facility in Texas
26.04.2018 - 09:58 UTCBerry Aviation (BYA, San Marcos) has broken ground on a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility covering 2,900 square metres at San Marcos, TX, worth USD2.7 million.
The project is scheduled to be completed in Autumn 2018.
The new facility will house Berry Aviation’s maintenance and supply-chain headquarters, and will include a 1,860 square metres maintenance hangar, machine shop, non-destructive testing lab, parts retrieval system, and more than 930 square metres of office space.
The carrier has secured a 40-year-long lease for the ground at the airport.
According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Berry Aviation is currently operating a fleet of nineteen aircraft, including five DHC-6-300s, five Dash 8-200s, and nine E120s, including four in a full-freighter variant. It also operates two Do328-100s and three Metroliners.
Texan operator Berry Aviation adds 3 Twin Otters, one Embraer E120
13.11.2013 - 07:16 UTCBerry Aviation (BYA, San Marcos) has added three DHC-6 Twin Otters and one E120 to its fleet to expand its cargo airlift and short takeoff and landing (STOL) operations in North America and Africa. Of the new machines arriving, two of the Twin Otters are headed to Africa to provide aerial delivery, casualty evacuation and cargo airlift missions for the Department of Defense (DOD) throughout the Trans-Sahara region, while the third will be used for training exercises. The EMB-120 will be used to expand BAI's on-demand cargo (ODC) service. The Texan carrier currently also operates two Dash 8-200s, three Do328-100s and one E120.
