Two more European operators have shown an interest in UK-based leisure carrier Monarch Airlines (1968) (London Luton) Sky News has reported quoting sources close to the talks.

According to the report, easyJet (London Luton) and Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) are among a raft of airlines that tabled proposals this week to partner with or take ownership of Monarch's short-haul operations. Norwegian (Oslo Gardermoen) has also been courted.

Wizz Air's interest reportedly stems from its desire to retain access to the UK market beyond Brexit. As such, the acquisition of Monarch's shorthaul operations would allow it to sidestep the onerous task of securing a UK Air Operator's Certificate (AOC).

As previously reported, Monarch's owners Greybull Capital, believe the carrier would be better off focusing on the longhaul leisure niche given increasingly cutthroat competition in the regional European market.
