The Australian Border Force, the country's national border security and law enforcement agency, will add three Global 6500s supplied by Bombardier Defense, the defence and special missions division of Bombardier Aerospace.

The three ultra-long-range aircraft will be deployed for maritime surveillance missions on behalf of the Australian Border Force. All jets will be operated by Metrea, a United States-based defence and aerospace company specialising in operational services and mission support.

Australian Border Force's contract with Metrea is valued at AUD4,32 million Australian dollars (USD3.1 million) for the period between May 1, 2026 and December 31, 2039. Metrea will operate a fleet of 11 aircraft on both short- and long-range aerial surveillance missions under the agreement. Services under the new contract are scheduled to commence on January 1, 2028.

Currently, the Australian Border Force's fixed-wing fleet comprises six DHC-8-200(MPA)s manufactured between 1995 and 2000, a 1995-built DHC-8-300(MPA), and three DHC-8-Q300(MPA)s produced in 2007. All De Havilland Aircraft of Canada turboprops are operated by Leidos Australia. The border force further leases an Eurocopter AS350 and a B412 Bell Helicopter.

Separately, Leidos Australia operates four Challenger 604s on behalf of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the national agency responsible for maritime safety, search and rescue, and marine pollution response in Australian waters.

The Australian Border Force's Global 6500 aircraft will mark the introduction of special mission-configured Global-series jets in Australia.
