Thai VietJetAir (VZ, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) is pressing ahead with plans to develop Udon Thani as a regional aviation hub, chief executive Woranate Laprabang told the Bangkok Post newspaper.

The airline plans to double its service between Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Udon Thani from 2x to 4x daily in September 2026, with the potential for a fifth daily rotation if demand warrants. Currently, it does not fly to any other destinations from Udon Thani.

Thai VietJetAir is also studying a nonstop route between Udon Thani and Ho Chi Minh City, though it has not disclosed a launch date. The Thai authorities previously identified several other potential international links, including Hanoi Noi Bai International, Taipei Taoyuan, Kuala Lumpur International, Tokyo Narita, and Osaka Kansai.

The carrier has introduced its SkyConX check-through product at Udon Thani for passengers connecting via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. Travellers can check in and drop off their baggage at Udon Thani, though international sectors continue to operate out of Suvarnabhumi.

Meanwhile, Udon Thani airport is seeking official designation as an international airport. Terminal B has been upgraded with customs, immigration, quarantine, and health-control facilities, and the Department of Airports is preparing an application for submission to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand.

Five carriers currently serve Udon Thani: Thai VietJetAir, Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways International, and Thai Lion Air. The airport, which features a 3,048-metre runway, connects to six domestic destinations but does not currently handle international flights.
